Richford residents focus on families and youth
By Wendy Post
Thanks to a group of citizens with a desire to build a family oriented
community, the town of Richford now offers concessions for families and
summer programs for youth. Additions and renovations to Rawley Park, as
well as the continuation of a Summer Youth Program, allows residents of
the community to explore healthy ways for spending time together.

The Summer Youth Program, which is held at the Richford Community Hall,
began over six years ago. The program, which is six weeks long, offers
youth activities as well as education relative to nutrition. The
Food$marts Program offered through Cornell Cooperative Extension is one
of the programs offered to youth. Other activities include gardening
classes, dance classes, a health clinic, the dental van, craft classes,
and much more. According to Becky Randall, site coordinator, the youth
program is a big help. "There is definitely a need within the
community," said Randall. The program welcomed 25 kids per day this
summer. A free lunch was also held through the Owego Apalachin School
District. "Many of the kids come for the free lunch," added Randall.
This community project has received guidance and assistance from Rural
Economic Area Partnership (REAP). According to Randall, "REAP help to
solicit volunteers and raise community interest." For more information

Another recent activity within the community is the renovation and
development of Rawley Park. The project, which began in 2000, renovated
the existing ball diamond, installed a new playground, and will
eventually build a basketball court. The committee also added two
tables and grills to the pavilion and picnic area. According to Bernie
Mertz, Coordinator of the Rawley Park Renovation Project, "the projects
are on-going." The park, which is currently maintained by the Town, is
open Memorial Day to Labor Day for the public. Thanks to REAP, grants
were located for the renovations with a recent Community Foundation
grant awarded. REAP was also instrumental in bringing together a park
committee to oversee the project. Emile Stuhlmiller was the REAP
Representative that assisted in making the volunteer effort for the
project come together. For more information you can contact Bernie
Mertz at 607-657-4406.
